Thanks, I think Seligman was the name I couldn’t recall. I will look into the differences and see what it is that she finds so offensive!

Hi Matthew,

Good review of the meeting! I was there too, and share your takeaways.

Like you, although I accepted the bulk of what Barbara Ehrenreich said, I was uneasy about the hostility she showed towards Positive Psychology. I read Jon Haidt’s book “The happiness hypothesis” late in 2008, and found it very compelling. Barbara’s criticisms seemed to focus primarily on the “Learned optimism” ideas of Martin Seligman. I don’t know if she would extend the same criticisms to Jon Haidt.

Thanks for the references and your thoughts on this Matthew.

I couldn’t find the percentage statistics so I just used what I had which was the absolute majority although I did wonder if percentage would have produced a different result.

As I have said to everyone who has responded to this, I really want other people to do their own analysis. the reason I did it was because there were various discussions going on and when I asked if anyone had actually looked at the data, nobody responded so I thought I’d have a crack myself but as I said I am not a statistician.
